Virtual Bookkeepers (does it work?) Tips for Online Work Rapport between Employer and Employee
Make sure both you and your employer have a clear and precise understanding of what your role is and what is expected from you on a daily basis.
Ask to schedule ˝ hour weekly virtual meetings to discuss top priorities of the business. Remember this is not a ‘gab session’; rather a business meeting - so treat it as one.
Keep the lines of communication open through email or voicemail. This way if you are going to be ‘out of the office’ for any length of time he/she will be informed.
Discuss what the policy and procedures are for reporting billable hours. Keep track of hours worked in a personal log book in case of any discrepancies.
NO PROOF OF PURCHASE! BR Bookkeeping would like to address the importance of receipts.
It is our experience that Accountants, (while doing their part of the accounting practices)
will claim all deductions for their clients according to the income tax regulations.
This is a good thing for the clients of course, but for certain areas of the tax return, receipts are required for
auditing purposes. Us ‘bean counters’ are notorious for scrap pieces of paper that carry any tiny shred of evidence
of information that relates to a purchase or sale.
On the other hand, it has been our experience that some accounting firms will accept a Visa (or similar) Statement as
proof of purchase to submit to CRA. Let us inform you now…this is not the case….Statements do not always justify the
purchase.
For example: if you purchase office supplies at Walmart because the sale is cheaper than at Staples, how would a CRA
know exactly what was purchased…..was it ‘paper’ or the new BBQ for the cabin?
And just to be sure….this is the client’s responsibility to retain the receipts, not your accountant or tax preparer. So
the next time you make a purchase, remember this; will this become a deduction to your business or personal income tax,
or will it become an AUDIT that will be repaid back to CRA due to NO PROOF OF PURCHASE!
